Generators

Generators are used for the generation of electric power. There are basically two types of generators: standby generators and portable generators. Generators ensure that most of the essential appliances can be run whenever there is a power outage. Standby generators provide backup power in homes and offices and are permanently installed outside the house or office building. They are plugged into the electric circuits or home wiring. Standby generators can automatically detect disruption in the usual electric supply and begin supplying power within a few seconds. Portable generators are usually used in places where there is no supply of power or the need for power is less such as on construction sites camps. These generators are sufficient for lighting and to run appliances like televisions, refrigerators, sump pumps and furnaces.

Generators are available in varying size and output power. The choice of buying the right type of generator depends upon a number of factors such as the wattage capacity, voltage ratings, fuel type, fuel efficiency, noise level, portability and price.

Generators for home use most often run on fuels such as gasoline, diesel, natural gas or propane. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Gasoline is inexpensive and easily available. Gasoline generators gives the most power per weight unit but require frequent maintenance. It is also noisy, emits harmful carbon monoxide and the engine wears faster than diesel, propane or natural gas generators.

Diesel is easy to acquire but is comparatively more expensive. Diesel generators require less maintenance and are fuel-efficient. Its disadvantage is that it is noisier, emits more smoke and smells, and harder to start in cold weather.

Propane is expensive and is feasible for homeowners who already have a storage tank to store propane. Propane generators require less maintenance, has no condensation and no problem starting up in cold weather like the gasoline generators. However, propane gas or natural gas generators consume more fuel per kilowatt of power produced than diesel generators. Natural gas generators are the most convenient to use as there is continuous supply of fuel. They can be connected to home gas lines.

A generator should always be used according to the guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Care should be taken to see that the generator is not overloaded. A heavy-duty extension cord must be used to connect appliances to the generator. A qualified electrician must be called in to install a transfer switch to plug the generator to the home wiring system. Refueling the generator when in operation should be avoided. Spilling of fuel on the heated components may cause fire.

Smaller generators can meet most of the basic power needs of a homeowner. Buying a larger generator will consume more fuel to power the same appliances that a smaller generator could. A 5-kilowatt portable generator can power main lights, televisions, sump pumps and refrigerators. Generators of higher wattage capacity are also available according to the needs of the individual house owner. Commercial establishments may need standby generators having an output capacity of more than 200 KW and supplying three-phase power, that is, 120, 240, 480 volts.

It is always wise to invest in good quality generators. All brands and models of generators are listed on the -- a very convenient way to find the best deal.

Autosurfs - The New Generator of Making Money

Autosurf sites are a new way for people to make money. It is definitely not a get rich quick idea. The basic concept is that someone signs up for a site and then watches ads. Only so many ads are watched per day and a percentage is earned by watching them. It is usually only about 1% so it takes a long time to make any significant amount of money. The belief is that someone watching the ads may see something they wish to purchase and visit the site, thus generating a profit for the site. This is how the autosurfer gets paid, from sales made at the site. It is actually a relatively new concept in terms of bringing internet traffic to a site, even though it has been around for several years.

Some autosurf sites work by also paying the person a percentage of those they recruit to watch the ads. So in a way it could be listed as a pyramid program. The idea here is that the surfer will earn more money by having people under them, watching the same ads. Many sites charge a fee to join before allowing someone to watch the ads. In essence that person is helping to pay for another person's ad watching. It also helps out the site owners by letting them keep more profit from gaining watchers without paying more out of pocket. The fee can range and higher fees can give access to more ads, to entice the surfer to think they will earn more money faster. For some this is the case, especially someone that does not need to work outside the home and has long hours to sit in front of a computer doing nothing. Of course there is also the fact that many sites don't require any feedback or acknowledgement that a person actually saw the site, and thus someone could just have their computer on but be doing something else.

There are questions of if an autosurf program is nothing more than a Ponzi scam with different terms. This stems from places that charge to join and then pay older members from the newer ones join fees. They have also been called pyramid scams when someone will earn more money by having others under them. It is similar to robbing Peter to pay Paul. People should be wary when seeing an offer to make money just by watching ads. Many places have payout amounts that can take months to reach, so that it is not really worth the time that will be put in.

Propane Generators

Protect yourself from prolonged power outages with a propane powered generator. In many areas, severe weather or natural disasters can take out your power supply for days, or even weeks. Your reserve, or back-up power system can quickly, safely and inexpensively pick up the slack of unexpected outages, and many offer a seamless transfer from electricity to propane.

If you are investing in a large back-up generator which is fixed, you would do well to consider one fuelled by propane gas. A propane powered back up generator provides security and peace of mind by automatically turning on whenever your electricity supply fails. Propane tanks are available in a many types of size, so you are bound to find one which suits your needs for size and location.

You will need to have an electrician install a power transfer switch from the house's main electrical panel. Then just fire up the generator, run a single extension cord into the transfer switch and power the circuits you need through the main circuit breaker. This eliminates the need for extension cords draped all over the house.

Alternately, you may want to consider a portable propane generator. Or perhaps you are considering buying a portable propane generator? Maybe the word ?portable? is slightly misleading in this case, since most of these tend to weigh in at around 250-300 lbs., so it is not exactly lightweight. If you do consider one of these, ensure it comes with wheels.

Unlike battery generators, you need never worry about your back-up generator battery running low, and you would not need to conserve power during an outage by shutting appliances down. As long as you have the fuel supply, you can keep running your propane generator, day and night.

But a propane generator is not just for home use --- more than half a million American farmers rely on propane to run generators, irrigation systems, to control weeds, and much more.

Another huge plus for propane is that battery power can be expensive. Gasoline and diesel are also expensive options when compared to propane gas which is an extremely inexpensive fuel.

But maybe it is too late? Perhaps you already own a back-up generator, which runs from another fuel. In that case, you will know only too well the disadvantages of a diesel, natural gas, or electric generator. There is a solution. There are plenty of options available in conversion kits, which can change the fuel source of your generator, without putting you through the cost of upgrading to a new one. Most generators can be transformed into propane generators, allowing you to benefit from using this cost efficient, clean and reliable fuel.

Determining the portable generator that will deliver enough power

Because different models of portable generators are capable of delivering different amounts of power, it is important to choose one that will deliver enough power, or even slightly more power than you need.

To do this you will need to know what appliances you plan to operate simultaneously from your generator and then determine how many watts they need to operate. This information will be listed on a label somewhere on the appliance in most cases or in the user manual. Keep in mind that the wattage required to start an appliance is often higher than what is required to operate it. To compensate for variance you should utilize a portable generator that can handle an operating load at least 10% higher than you anticipate needing.

By choosing the most effective Yamaha portable generator for your needs, you will reduce your costs, weight and space required while maintaining enough power to meet your needs. You will also extend the life of your generator by not overworking it, and in some cases, the life of the appliances that are running off of it because some types of appliances can be damaged when operated without enough power.
