Preventative Maintenance for Home Generators

Preventive maintenance is one of the most valuable things you can do to protect your investment in a diesel generator. The concept of preventive maintenance is to catch problems, faults and leaks before they happen. It is patterned after the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!" The specific maintenance program has been in effect for over thirty-four years in the United States Department of Defense. If the age of the equipment was any indication of its effectiveness then the United States Armed forces have been doing fabulously. It is a system that works and keeps your equipment working long beyond its predicted life expiration.

Preventative maintenance is based on before, during and after operation checks. It is also founded on daily, weekly and monthly checks, which are conducted with liturgical frequency and accuracy. This article will cover the general maintenance checks for the diesel generator being used for your home power source.

Before Operation Checks: Step one, walk around your generator unit, specifically looking for any tell tale oil or fuel leaks on, beneath or around it. Record and repair any such Class III leaks immediately. Check the unit for any cracked, broken, loose or damaged parts. Check the oil and add to it as required according to you owners manual. Check the grounding cable and rod that they are tight and secure. Check on the air restriction meter if it is in the red then the air filter needs cleaning. If it still indicates red after cleaning then it needs to be replaced immediately. The generator is deadlined until this part is replaced and the air restriction meter is operating in the green. Check the air filter for any cracks, leaks, looseness, rough running or noise. Drain the day tank of water and sediment into a catch basin by means of the petcock. The tank will blow clear air when free of water and sediment. Drain water and sediment from strainer, primary and secondary filters until the fuel runs clear. Insure that a catch basin collects all oil and sediment. This will be recycled.

During Operation Checks:

Check the following generator controls and instruments to insure that they work within safe and acceptable limits. The battery indicator will be in the yellow when charging, green when fully charged and in the RED position when non-operational or unavailable. Check the frequency meter for the proper reading. It should read 60 hertz with a full load on the generator. Check on the percent rate current meter; it should not exceed 100% load. The voltmeter should read no more than 120v for America or 240v for Europe and Great Britain. The oil gauge should read between 20 to 45 PSI. The fuel gauge should read "FULL". Check the acoustical suppression kit for any loose or damaged parts and repair if required.

After Operations Checks:

Drain the day tank. Drain water and sediment from strainer, primary and secondary fuel filters. Check the acoustical suppression kit for any loose or damaged parts and repair if required. Fuel the tank after operation. Insure that there is no open flame, live wire, source of spark or smoking during refueling operations.

Weekly Operations Checks:

Check the electrolyte level of the batteries. The proper level is 3/8 inch above the lead plates. Monthly Operations Checks:

Drain the fuel tank of water and sediment.

Follow these steps regularly and your generators will operate for a long time without worry.

Invest In A Generator For Guaranteed Power

If you've ever lived through the aftermath of a natural disaster, you know one of the biggest symbols of civilization is often the first to do during a big storm - the power. For those who don't want to go without, a portable generator is often the solution. No matter the power source for a generator, however, safety must be considered when setting these up. Taking the time up front to set up a generator correctly is vital.

The first thing to do when considering purchasing a generator is to determine what household items must be run off it in the event of an emergency. This will help determine the size needed. Write down the equipment and take this list to the store where you intend to buy a generator. Don't expect to be able to get the air conditioning system, refrigerator and other major appliances all running at once off a portable model though. Just go for the most important.

If there is a family member who requires medical equipment that is powered, the generator must first take this into consideration. Make this your prime concern.

After picking out the correct generator to meet your needs, bring it home and read the instructions all the way through. Don't skip pages and don't take shortcuts. Generators can be lifesavers, but they can be dangerous, too.

The main concerns with generators tend to be carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and even fire. Since every one of these hazards is major, knowing what you're doing with a generator is very important before turning it on.

In general, these tips can help make your generator use much more safe:

* Don't use a generator in a closed in or partially enclosed space. Doing so can create issues with carbon monoxide. The gas cannot be seen or smelled, so it is particularly dangerous.

* If you feel dizzy or sick while operating a generator, get outside, fresh air right away.

* Invest in battery powered CO alarms for your home. These can tell you if you're running into a problem. Make sure you check the batteries on a regular basis.

* Keep generators in dry conditions and plug items directly into the generator or use only outdoor-rated extension cords recommended by the manufacturer.

* Inspect the generator's cords for any signs of wear.

* Don't try to power house wiring by plugging a generator into a wall outlet. This can lead to shock.

* If wiring work is needed for the generator, contact an electrician.

* Don't replace generator fuel while the machine is hot. Let it cool completely before refilling the tank.

Generators are very popular in locations that have a lot of power outs and are especially useful in emergency centers such as hospitals. In regions that have been hit particularly hard by bad weather, the reports start to wrack up about misuse as those who have survived the storm fall pray to their own ignorance. Don't let this happen to you.

A portable generator can be a real lifesaver in a big emergency. Unfortunately, these machines can also cause problems if users don't follow proper safety procedures. Before firing up a generator, make sure all instructions have been read and followed. A little bit of extra time can save a life later.

Determining the portable generator that will deliver enough power

Because different models of portable generators are capable of delivering different amounts of power, it is important to choose one that will deliver enough power, or even slightly more power than you need.

To do this you will need to know what appliances you plan to operate simultaneously from your generator and then determine how many watts they need to operate. This information will be listed on a label somewhere on the appliance in most cases or in the user manual. Keep in mind that the wattage required to start an appliance is often higher than what is required to operate it. To compensate for variance you should utilize a portable generator that can handle an operating load at least 10% higher than you anticipate needing.

By choosing the most effective Yamaha portable generator for your needs, you will reduce your costs, weight and space required while maintaining enough power to meet your needs. You will also extend the life of your generator by not overworking it, and in some cases, the life of the appliances that are running off of it because some types of appliances can be damaged when operated without enough power.

Tips for Choosing the Right Portable Generator

A portable generator is just what the name implies. It is for portable and non-permanent, stationary, installed applications. Portables do not have a forced air cooling system that changes air within a compartment. It releases its combustion heat and exhaust to the ambient air, which simply means that you can't build it into a room or generator house without auxiliary air and exhaust handling equipment. A stationary unit has a forced air or other type of cooling system that allows it to be enclosed, most typically in an outside weather housing mounted on a concrete pad similar to a central air conditioning unit.

A portable generator does not have an engine controller, which automatically replicates all the actions you subconsciously perform when starting your car. Engine controllers allow for remote control via a simple on-off switch or automatically with an automatic transfer switch (ATS). Stationary generators also have more extensive protection and safety shutdown features than do portables.

Portable generators all operate at the faster 3600-RPM speed where more engine power is produced allowing for a smaller engine, which is a benefit in reducing weight. Most stationary units use larger engines running at a slower 1800-RPM speed to achieve the same power result, but with much quieter and smoother operation. It's kind of the same thing as the difference between your lawnmower and your car at a fast idle.

Don't try to cut corners by not getting a generator with enough power. The cost per watt (the unit of electrical power) goes down considerably as the size of the generator goes up. Many people create problems of all sorts by buying small. Only resistive loads like lights and heaters can be added directly to calculate load requirements. Others-like motors-require extra power of several magnitudes to start than they use to run. Most people have little comprehension of how much power they use in normal living or how much various loads consume.

If you're thinking of upgrading your generated power, remember that anything that makes heat with electricity (electric heat, water heaters, dryers, etc.) uses large amounts of power compared to other loads. If your house heats with electricity, consider another heat source or be prepared to buy a large generator.

Motors that start under light load (well and septic pumps, many fans) require two to three times the power to start than they do to run while those starting under heavy loads (refrigerators, compressors) may take as much as five times to start. A "rule of thumb": Allow 2-3 KW of generator power per horsepower of electric motor.

Benefits Of A Generator Sitemap

Generator sitemap programs can be downloaded from various sources on the Internet. Generator sitemap programs have two fundamental purposes. Generator sitemap programs help surfers navigate a site effectively. At the same time, a generator sitemap program encourages search engine spiders. Google offers one of the most popular generator sitemap programs ever to hit the Internet.

The generator sitemap of google makes it possible for a website to get listed and get updated by the google search engine. Setting up the generator sitemap helps speed up the addition of the web pages of a site to the google listing. The generator sitemap also makes it easier for a site to get noticed by online surfers. In addition, any changes made to a website that has a generator sitemap is immediately picked up by google. The generator sitemap also helps keep online information fresh and up-to-date for users.

Visibility is key to generator sitemap

Visibility is a major concern when using a generator sitemap. A website that is completely indexed has better chances of getting top search engine placement in page results. Many of the popular browsers used by searchers and that support java recognize generator sitemap programs. These include firefox and Internet explorer.

An online consumer that searches for a specific content on the web can immediately be directed to any one of the web pages of a particular site. The generator sitemap makes it easier for a search engine to provide accurate results from web pages they are familiar with.

Who can benefit from a generator sitemap?

A generator sitemap is highly recommended for websites that often do repeated modification of their web pages. A generator sitemap can be used for websites of any size, regardless of the number of web pages a site may contain.

Although using a generator sitemap is not a guarantee of increased site rankings, it does however provide a website a better opportunity of getting listed on a search engine.

Working with a generator sitemap

Most of the available generator sitemap programs available on the web make use of extensible markup language or XML. Similar to hypertext markup language or HTML, XML is used widely in blogs and syndicated feeds on the Internet. Each line of a XML code for a generator sitemap has a specific purpose.

The location or .loc identifies the name of the web page of a website. The line .lastmod indicates when the web page was last modified. The format for .lastmod can either be dd.mm.yyyy, dd.mm.yyyy hh:mm, dd/mm/yyyy or dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm. Shortcuts can also be used to simply the assignment of dates to the cell.

.changefreq advises the search engine of a specific time frame when the web page is regularly updated. This can either be done on an hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis. For web pages that are not updated, the value 'never' is used. .priority indicates the level of priority that a search engine should give a particular web page of a website. These levels range from 0.0 for least priority to 1.0 for high priority.

Creating a dynamic generator sitemap

Creating a dynamic generator sitemap is useful for websites containing various web pages. The google search engine makes it easy for users to adapt their google sitemap with the help of a python script.

The python script generates a sitemap using sitemap protocol. This creates a sitemap from either access logs, URL lists or from web server directories.

Tips for using a generator sitemap from google

As one of more popular search engines offering a generator sitemap for websites on the Internet, google offers a few tips for its loyal users. Using the google sitemap url encoder/decoder is helpful for submitting sitemaps to google. For websites that have numerous web pages, creating a sitemap can be a tremendous task. For this situation it is best to click on the column title in order to make it easier for a URL list to get sorted.

The google generator sitemap allows users to save their settings after creating a sitemap. Users can use these saved settings as a guideline for succeeding generator sitemap updates. The generator sitemap also recognizes the use of robots.txt files.

Using a generator sitemap is a positive move in getting top ranking on the Internet's top search engines as well as high visibility among online users.

Jeremiah Patton has been currently using sitemaps for easy navigation for visitors and for better crawling from search engines. Jeremiah Patton uses a sitemap for his work at home moms website http://www.2ndincome4u.com with great success.

Guaranteed Traffic Generators!

How do you promote a web site for a company that has an extremely limited buying group? Sure, most
of the companies on the Internet today sell one small product or service, which is searched for by
thousands, if not millions of people every day. But, if your company is like ours, you don't have a
lot of people searching for your product. Or your competitor's product! Our company is in the high
voltage capacitor business. There just aren't a lot of uses for our product in today's "smaller,
faster, cheaper" world. What does all of this mean? It means that I have to work twice as hard as
most web developers or promoters to get hits to our site. If your company is like our company, then
you will want to follow the experience driven methods I have listed below.

1. Links, links, links.
I can't say enough about getting sites to link to yours. It is a very simple method, but it takes
time and it WORKS! In my case, I have simply searched for companies that would require one of our
parts. I then write to them and let them know that we would be interested in a link to their site.
Nine out of ten times, they link to us without ever asking for a reciprocal link! Most search
engines today take into account the number of other sites that link to your site. They assume that
if other companies are linked to you, that your site must be good. Another approach is to search
for links to your competitor's page. Go to the sites that come up, and ask them to link to your site
as well. You will be amazed at the number of web sites that are simply devoted to linking to other
pages! To search for links to a page, try using AltaVista or HotBot. As an example, type in the
following: link:www.yahoo.com You will be amazed at the results! Of course, after you request
links to pages, you will have to wait until the search engines have indexed again before they know
that you are now linked to other sites. Search Engines index on a rate from every two weeks to ever
six months.

2. Meta tags.
You MUST make sure that you have your Meta tags generated properly. This has been covered by Web
Pro News an infinite amount of time, and it is just as important as registering your own domain
name. Without Meta tags, most search engines will just pass over you. For a brief explanation on
Search Engines and for a free Meta tag evaluation, visit Northern Webs at
http://www.northernwebs.com/set/setsimjr.html

3. Text Only versions of your site.
If your page is available to other countries, as our is, it is a good idea to have a text only
version of your site. Why? Because most of the people who are not located in the United States do
not have the Internet connection speeds that we here in the US take for granted. Most of these
people also have older computers with slower processors and low graphics capability. It has to be
annoying for people in foreign countries to go to a site that has a product that they need, only to
find out that they can't read the fancy Flash programming. I do not currently have this text only
version, but I am working on it as we speak. So, to all of you in foreign countries, I have
listened to your requests, and I am taking action!

4. New Killer Content.
Sure, you can have two thousand pages on your site. But, if someone has read them all, why would
they come back? You have to continuously update your page and add new killer content. I suggest a
weekly column or monthly bulletin. You just need something to keep the visitors interested in book
marking your site for future viewing.

If you really want to gain visitors, then you will. When I started our site, we had 25 visitors a
day. Now, we have had 100,000 NEW visitors in the past three months. We now have a 50% return
visitor rate. In our industry, that is good. For our business, it is working phenomenally! The
last bit of advice I can offer is to continually read the Web Pro News daily! It offers intelligent
and cutting edge information, which will help your web site grow exponentially.
